NIM has sent written input to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights regarding the Committee’s ongoing work to draft a General Comment on the impacts of drug policies on economic, social and cultural rights. NIM’s input is based on the Committee’s draft annotated outline to the General Comment.
In the letter, NIM encourages the Committee to formulate the General Comment based on stringent legal methodology. NIM also believe the General Comment is a good opportunity to clarify what legal protection from discrimination people with substance use disorders have under the Covenant. Additionally, the Committee is encouraged to explore the contents of proportionality assessments in this area. NIM also encourages the Committee to elaborate on the relationship between the Covenant and the three UN drug conventions.
